BANGA, South Cotabato: The student behind a shooting at Banga National High School had been known as a consistent honor student and a member of the school’s Science, Technology, and Engineering (STE) class, according to local officials. The September 18, 2026 attack left three people dead, including the student gunman, and several others injured.
A Familiar Face on Campus
Before the incident, the student stood out for his academics and activities. Banga Mayor Albert Palencia described him as intelligent and noted that he was also a taekwondo player.
According to accounts shared after the shooting, the student received a grade of 76 the day before the attack. Authorities have not established that grade as the motive and are still looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
What Investigators Are Examining
Officials said they are reviewing the student’s online activity as part of the inquiry. Investigators are also examining his phone, notes, and other belongings for possible evidence.
The firearm reportedly belonged to the suspect’s father, a Department of Education employee, and authorities said it had not been properly secured. Officials have used the case to remind gun owners about safe firearm storage, especially in homes with children.
The investigation remains active, and no single cause has been confirmed. Authorities have encouraged families to stay attentive to signs of distress in young people and to reach out for professional support when it’s needed.
