Additionally, for scholars who wish to study courses or programs engaged in research, a special grant is available for thesis preparation. In some circumstances, computer literacy, preparatory language, and other courses similar to this may be covered by the scholarship program.
Qualifications
The following are the eligibility criteria for student applicants that they must meet to qualify for the scholarship program.
- Applicants should be nationals of an ADB borrowing member country and a Japanese ODA scholarship-eligible country.
- They must not hold dual citizenship in any developed country.
- Applicants must have gained admission to an improved master’s course at a Designated Institution.
- Student applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent with a superior academic record.
- Additionally, they must have at least two (2) years of full-time professional experience that may be acquired after a university degree at the time of application. Aside from that, applicants must have proficiency in oral and written communication skills using the English language to be able to pursue studies.
- They must not be older than 35 years old at the time of application unless waived in exceptional cases with the expressed endorsement of the Government of Japan.
- Student applicants must be in good health.
- Additionally, they must agree to return and work in their home country for at least two (2) years after completion of studies under the program to contribute to its development.
- Also, to qualify, student applicants must not be Executive Directors, Alternate Directors, management, staff, and consultants of ADB or close relatives of the aforementioned by blood or by adoption. The term “close relatives” may refer to a spouse, mother, stepmother, father, stepfather, sister, stepsister, brother, stepbrother, son, daughter, aunt, uncle, niece, or nephew.
- They must also not be a staff of ADB-JSP Designated Institutions.
- They are not living or working in a country other than their home country.
- They are not already enrolled in graduate degree programs.
Requirements
Here is a list of all the documentary requirements that you have to prepare and provide beforehand.
- Applicants must have a duly accomplished ADB-JSP Information Sheet. You can access it here
- They must also have a copy of their Undergraduate diploma.
- A copy of the Official Transcript of Records with Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).
- A Certificate of Employment (last 5 years) issued by the company. Preferably, with the company’s logo or letterhead stating the start and end date of employment.
- A Certificate of Income issued by the company. Preferably, with the company’s logo or letterhead. It can be any of the following:
- Annual Income
- Monthly Income
- Latest Income Tax Return
- A Certificate of Family Income issued by the company. Preferably, with the company’s logo or letterhead.
- If the applicant is single, the Parent’s Annual or Monthly Income.
- If the applicant is married, the Spouse’s Annual or Monthly Income.
- If unemployed or parents or spouse may be retired or deceased, an authenticated document must be submitted.

How to Process ADB JSP Scholarship
To apply for the scholarship program, applicants must undergo and be familiar with the following application procedures:
Step 1: The applicant shall request information and application forms from the chosen partner institution.
Step 2: The applicant shall then have to the above-mentioned documentary requirements.
Step 3: He or she shall then submits or sends the document to the chosen institution.
Step 4: Upon submission, the institution will evaluate and decide on admission and applicant.
Step 5: The institution shall then send the shortlisted list of candidates to ADB.
Step 6: After that, the ADB reviews the submission from the institution.
Step 7: Then, the ADB recommends awardees based on its selection criteria to the Japanese executive director for approval.
Step 8: The ADB will then select scholars and inform the institution.
Step 9: Lastly, the institution will inform the scholars.
Important Reminders
Below are some of the important things to keep in mind when applying for the ADB scholarship program.
- The applicants are required to submit their latest Income Tax Return (ITR) or certification of their annual or monthly salary, whichever is available. Additionally, they should also submit a certificate of family income (parent’s income).
- Aside from that, the duly accomplished forms with all the copies of academic records should be sent to the institution at least six (6) months before the commencement of the intake that you wish to join.
- Additionally, only candidates who have been offered admission and endorsed by the academic institutions will be considered for the scholarships of ADB.
- Scholars must also be informed that the ADB-JSP does not cover expenses for the scholar’s family, extra-curricular courses or training, additional during the study program, additional expenses related to supplementary educational materials, field trips, or participation in workshops, seminars, or internships while at the academic institution or purchase of educational equipment such as computers.
- Additionally, completion of the application form or admission by the academic institution does not mean that you have been accepted for a scholarship. Accordingly, you should not take any action concerning your current employment or otherwise until you have been informed by the institution that you have been awarded a scholarship.
- No separate application to ADB is necessary.
