The Philippine government is setting aside P8.67 billion to back Filipino students chasing careers in science and technology. Under the proposed Fiscal Year 2027 National Budget, the funding will support the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Scholarship Programs, opening more doors for the country’s future scientists, engineers, and researchers.
More Scholars, Wider Reach
The bigger budget means more young people get a chance. In FY 2027, the programs will support 67,504 scholars nationwide. That’s 2,407 more than the 65,097 backed under the FY 2026 General Appropriations Act, a 3.70% jump in government-funded students.
The move reflects a steady bet on Filipino talent. Department of Budget and Management (DBM) Acting Secretary Kim Robert C. De Leon said the higher allocation shows the administration’s commitment to growing a stronger pool of scientists, engineers, researchers, and innovators who can tackle real problems facing the country.
Where the Money Goes
The P8.67-billion proposal splits across two major programs:
- P7.55 billion for the DOST-Science Education Institute (SEI), which runs undergraduate and graduate scholarships along with advanced specialized training. The SEI also works to build a stronger science and technology culture across the country.
- P1.12 billion for the Philippine Science High School System (PSHSS), which delivers specialized secondary education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The goal is to prepare students with the 21st-century skills needed to compete globally.
Building Skills for National Priorities
The scholarships aren’t just about degrees. The plan aims to channel that knowledge into fields where the country needs it most, including:
- Agriculture
- Health
- Disaster resilience
- Digital transformation
- Industry and other national priorities
By funding students from science high schools all the way through graduate studies, the government hopes to grow a reliable pipeline of skilled workers ready to turn research into practical solutions and new economic opportunities.
